Ayaz Yıldız is an Istanbul-based fine art photographer and new media artist. She holds a Bachelor's degree from the Department of Photography and Video at Yıldız Technical University and completed her Master's degree at Marmara University Fine Arts Institute, Department of Photography.
Focusing on themes of existence, temporality, memory, and transformation, the artist constructs profound visual narratives spanning from urban textures to the philosophical boundaries of the image.
Recognized with awards in national and international competitions, her artworks have been exhibited across a broad dynamic platform—ranging from outdoor digital exhibitions in Times Square and prestigious international selections such as Paris Photography Fair, to curated group shows, independent gallery exhibitions, and esteemed publications.
Artist Statement
A Woman Giving Birth to Flowers explores the ontological kinship between womanhood and nature: two beings that are creative, nurturing, life-giving and full of hope, delicate yet unyielding. The title’s act of “giving birth” exceeds its biological meaning. It becomes a metaphor for reconstructing a vibrant, organic existence from the residue of destroyed matter.
The work began with analog portrait negatives shot on Ilford HP5 Plus 400 (35 mm) film, which I brought into direct contact with fire. The burn marks, blistering and melting points that emerged formed a visual language that was uncontrollable and only half accidental. The voids opened by the burning emulsion became spaces that carry both the destruction and the potential of the image. I scanned the deformed negatives at high resolution, inverted their tonal values and rebuilt them through contrast work in Adobe Photoshop. Ivy and leaf textures, photographed separately with a Nikon D610, were then placed into the voids left by the flames, so that burnt matter and living tissue merge into a single body.
The series grows out of my wider practice, which returns to existence, temporality, memory and transformation. Alongside my artistic work, I research death and photography in an academic thesis; this series asks the question from the opposite side: what grows from what is lost?
Roland Barthes described photography as “that-has-been,” an indexical trace of the past. Fire turns that trace into something still unfolding, “that which is coming into being.” Here, destruction is not an ending but the ground from which a new life emerges.
